Developmental assessment of Young children 4 (1+3)
Lesson 16:Ethical issues in assessment of young children
Child barriers
Effective child assessment is hampered by age specific characteristics of infants & pre schoolers. Barriers in this category include:-
Distractibility.
Inconsistency in behavior.
Limited or non existent verbal abilities.
Feeling strange towards unfamiliar adults.
If the child is handicapped, that condition poses further barriers to effective assessment especially for sensory or motor impairments.
Visually & hearing handicapped children learn basic skills through different modalities hence require adaptations to the assessment process.
Children with motor & verbal problems may not give a true indications of their abilities because many items for young children relay on motorist indicators.
