Lesson 16:Ethical issues in assessment of young children

Child barriers

Effective child assessment is hampered by age specific characteristics of infants & pre schoolers. Barriers in this category include:-

  • Distractibility.
  • Inconsistency in behavior.
  • Limited or non existent verbal abilities.
  • Feeling strange towards unfamiliar adults.
  • If the child is handicapped, that condition poses further barriers to effective assessment especially for sensory or motor impairments.
  • Visually & hearing handicapped children learn basic skills through different modalities hence require adaptations to the assessment process.
  • Children with motor & verbal problems may not give a true indications of their abilities because many items for young children relay on motorist indicators.
