EARLY CHILDHOOD CARE AND DEVELOPMENT
Lesson 21: Outdoor play activities in ECE center

Outdoor play activities

Outdoor play enhances large muscle coordination. With a good assortment of equipment, many children can enjoy and develop within the expected range. There should be no instructions and controlled activity as it restricts time for free exploration.

When children are outdoors, they develop all kinds of motor skills like gross, fine and perceptual. For example digging, running, jumping, climbing, pushing improves gross motor skills, transferring, filling and judging the quantity of water and sand, guiding the path to bicycles improves perceptual motor skills and through repairing, painting a wheel toy, tying, weaving helps to improve fine motor skills. The school should have outdoor equipment that is good for climbing, balancing, hanging and lifting etc. Both choosing and maintenance of outdoor equipment is extremely important. In general, the more durable and versatile the equipment, the more stimulating it will be. Visits to swimming pools, outside trips can also be organized. Ground provided for outdoor play should be safe and preferably sandy.
