Important Skills needed in Early Childhood

Self-Help Skills

  • Self-Bathing-Two-year-olds should be able to wash the front of the body. By the age of 6, they should be able to wash the back and neck.
  • Self-Dressing-At 2 years children should be able to put on simple clothes such as T-shirts. At 3, they should be able to put on clothes with zippers and buttons. At 6, they should be able to dress themselves completely.
  • Self-Feeding-At 2 years, children should be able to use spoons. At 3, they should be able to mix soft food with fingers.
  • Self-Grooming- Between 2 and 3 years, children should brush their hair without messing it up. By 4 years, they should do a good job of brushing their teeth.
  • Stair Climbing- At 2, children should be able to walk up and down the stairs by holding on. By 3 years, they should do so without holding on.
  • Toileting- By 2 and 2 ½ years, children should be able to go to the toilet alone for bowel movements and for urination. A year later they should go to the toilet alone during the night.
