This scheme, meant for primary school children, aims at melting not only the nutritional deficiency in children, but also, in attracting and retaining them in the school and operates for 200 days in a year. Initiated in 1962-63 on the recommendation of National School Health Committee with the following objectives.
To improve health and encourage sound dietary habits among children.
To provide approximately are third of the dietary and nutritional requirements of children
To provide meal by making use of locally available foods
The scheme covers children of 6-11 years from weaker section of the society. The international assistance for the programme was by way of commodities like grain flour, wheat, vegetable oil, milk powder etc. free of cost at the Indian ports. The ministry of Health also evolved two schemes, one of them is feasibility of the testing of fortified staple. The main objectives of the scheme are
Evolving suitable recipes with fortified foods which are developed in the country from time to time.
Acceptability trails is a proper scientific manner find out how far the foods are acceptable to children.
Field trails in orphanages, nursery schools etc, where the effect of these funds on nutritional status etc will be critically and scientifically evaluated.
