Applied nutrition programme

The programme aims primarily at nutrition education to bring about a change in knowledge of and attitudes about food and food habits in rural areas. It encourages local production of food of nutritive value and envisages holding cooking demonstrations and feeding programmes among mothers and children. This programme is funded by the Ministry for the first 6 years of operation in each block over and above States' own resources.

This is an educational progarmme at the village and family level which aims to bring about changes the choice of food and feeding practices that involve little or no extra expense for the family. This progarmmes directly contribute on feeding of the young child, both through the education of the mother and by channeling a part of the food produced under various schemes of the progarmme in the diet of the child.

The department of rural development had takes up in early 60’s a progarmme of applied nutrition in rural areas in collaboration with UNICEF and other international bodies. This progarmme aims at increased production at the village level of various protective foods and training and education of villages in the production, preparation, preservation and consumption of these foods. Yuvak mandals and Mahila mandals are actively working not only with the production aspect of the programme but also with education and distribution of the food produced locally among expectant and nursing mothers and pre-school children.
