Building Components

  • A building consists of various architectural components.
  • On the first level are those major components that principally determine the structure and the basic character of the construction of the building. These major elements are the roof, foundation, exterior walls, floors, roof and elements for vertical circulation like stairs and elevators.
  • On the second level are the elements which although necessary, have generally less influence on determination of the basic form of the structure or the choice of the principal material and methods of construction. The second level includes windows, doors, ceilings and various items involved in the building service system like power, lighting, heating, ventilation and air conditioning.
  • The second level elements also contain site features outside the building.
  • The parts of a building are presented in the Figure 1. below:
