General light

Lesson 11 :TYPES AND REQUIREMENTOFLIGHTING

General light

By general light we mean light that shines unhindered in all directions from the source. This can mean bare tungsten or fluorescent bulb or one with a diffuser shade - a translucent covering over the bulb which distributes the light without glare. Even paper and glass globes, table and standard lamps with glass or other translucent shades and ceiling or wall-mounted opaline lights are considered as general lighting. Many rooms are lit solely by general light, frequently from one central pendent fitting, but this often results in monotony, with dull forms, little shadow and no highlights, and produces an inefficient light to work by.
