Classification of seams

Seams are generally classified into

  1. plain

  2. self finished

  3. special & decorative seams

They may also be divided into

  1. conspicuous and
  2. Inconspicuous seams.

Inconspicuous seams when finished will not show stitches on the right side of the garment. Ex: Plain and French. Conspicuous seams are those that show stitches on the right side of the garment. Ex: Run and fell seam, Corded and Lapped seam etc.

Another classification of seams is

  • Flat seams
  • Ridged seams

Flat seams are smooth and lie flat. Example: plain and run and fell seam. Ridge seams are not smooth and do not lie flat. Example: French seam, piped seam.
