Lesson 8 : Seams

Self finished seams

In the self finished seams raw edges are enclosed in the process of seam making and do not require separate finishing. The types of self finished seams are as following:

  1. Flat- fell or Run and fell seam
This is durable flat seam with raw edges enclosed and designed for woven fabrics. It is most suitable for constructing sportswear, men’s and children’s wear, reversible garments, and heavy-duty items requiring strong, durable seams. It can be difficult to construct on a heavy fabric. No seam finish is necessary.Figure

  2. French seam
It is a neat and durable seam as the raw edges are completely enclosed. This seam is used on lightweight woven, sheer and other delicate fabrics like voile, georgette etc. It is an excellent choice for see-through fabrics.Figure
