The Indian Botanical Garden, Sibur, Calcutta (West Bengal)

Rare species

• The garden was established on the suggestion of Robert kyd, an army man in 1787
• It is laid on a 150 hectare land in the twin city of Howrah, on the opposite side of the river Hoogly
• It ranks among the great botanical gardens of the world and is the seat of the Botanical Survey of India

Ornamental Trees

• The activities of the garden are distribution of seeds and seedlings, conducting botanical explorations, collection, preservations and identification of plants, besides research on botany and horticulture. The garden introduced coffee, India rubber, tobacco, cardamom, cocoa, flax, hemp etc.
• The important features of the garden include:
  • The giant 200-year-old Banyan Tree.
  • Palms in the palmetum with a pond in the foreground
  • Twenty six lakes occupying about one-ninth of the total area and inter-connected by underground pipes
  • The giant lily, Victoria regia which has giant disc-like leaves which can withstand the weight of a baby
  • The palm houses, orchid houses and fernery house and several thousand herbariums plants.
  • The Royal Palm Avenue near the rear gate
  • Green houses the best herbarium in the country and the library which has more than 25,000 volumes.
