Lesson 11:Garden Adornments And Structures

Garden furniture

  • Garden furniture is one of the ornaments in any outdoor garden.
  • Comfortable and esthetic furniture in the outdoor garden enhances the utility and beauty of a garden.
  • Garden furniture is a necessity to make people enjoy the garden.

  • For a residential garden chairs and tables can serve the purpose of garden furniture.
  • In a public garden, park benches, trash containers, playground equipment are considered as furniture.
  • The appropriateness of the outdoor furniture to its site is most important.
  • The seats should be comfortable, durable, artistic- looking, less prone to theft and vandalism and should not look out of place.
  • Wooden and fabric seats are comfortable to sit compared to those built in stone or iron or concrete, get easily heated in the summer and become cool in the winter thus uncomfortable to use.
  • Wooden seats should be made of good quality timber like teak treated with preservative and painted with moisture-proof chemicals to withstand the vagaries of weather especially moisture as the furniture has to remain outdoors.

  • The chair or bench should have an appropriate design. For example, a chrome seated chair will look completely out of place in the midst of a wood-laudscenery.
  • Rustic furniture in front of a modern sophisticated house may be completely out of place.
  • Stone or concrete seats are preferred in public parks due to their durability and being less prone to vandalism and theft unlike iron furniture which is though durable but more likely to be stolen because of the value of metal unless firmly fixed.
