Parent-Child Communication

Lesson 20 : Communication Process In Families

Parent-Child Communication

Children learn to communicate through participation in family interaction. The family should set aside regular time for communications. The frequency and quality of communication influences the children’s mental health. The quality of family communication may also affect children’s potential. Family communication should be honest, clear, specific, and direct. Behavioral limits, rules, or polices should be known to all family members. These limits should be applied in a flexible, human spirit.

Parent –child communication either consciously or unconsciously teaches children about their sex roles. Male babies are often treated roughly than female babies. Children can be guided in their development of human resources through communication. Parent who can recognize the developing unique capabilities of their children can promote positive self concepts in children through verbal reinforcement.
