Lesson 11 : Pockets

Introduction

A pocket is a campartment or pouch that has a closed end and is usually sewn into or onto a garment. Pockets are either decorative or functional or both. Its primary use is a depository or temporary holding place for items and/or hands. A pocket opening should be wide enough for hands and deep enough to keep objects from falling out. Pockets are designed for all types of garments.

Before cutting the pocket sections, check their shape, size and location in relation to both the garment design and the wearer. The size of the pocket should be in proportion with the wearer and with overall garment proportions. Check the location of each of the pocket and be sure that it is positioned in the right place. Functional pockets are generally located below the waist and decorative plackets are placed above. Pockets that are decorative as well as functional particularly form a visible portion of the garment. Skillful construction of enclosed seams, accurate positioning and smooth application are very crucial to the final appearance.
