Hemiramphidae - Only lower jaw prolonged or none of the jaw prolonged.

                         - Lacking needle-sharp teeth.

Sphyraenidae - Jaws pointed but not prolonged into a beak; 2 dorsal fins; the first spiny; pelvic fins thoracic in position.
