3.3.9.5.3 Acanthuridae (Surgeonfishes, Tangs and Unicorn fishes)

  • High bodied compressed fishes with a single folding lancet-like spine or one or two bony plates usually bearing sharp keels on either side of caudal peduncle.
  • Single dorsal fin.
  • Caudal fin truncate to lunate.

Eg. Acanthurus leucosternon, Naso unicornis, Zebrasoma veliferum

Similar Families

No family is to be confused with the Acanthuridae because of their distinctive caudal spines. However, this family resembles the families, Siganidae and Zandidae.
