General morphology

GENERAL MORPHOLOGY - MOSQUITOES

  • Head small and spherical
  • Eyes prominent, ocelli absent
  • Antennae slender with 14-15 joints (nematocerous)
  • Plumose in the male and Pilose in female. Palps 4 jointed
  • Three pairs of long and slender legs on the thorax
  • Abdomen long and slender. A pair of wings on the thorax
  • Body and wings covered with scales (on the veins and along the margins) 

Aedes

  • Morphological characters are similar to that of Culex
  • Characteristic white bands on all the joints especially in the limbs
  • Transmits Dirofilariasis in dogs, Fowl malaria, Equine encephalomyelitis and Setaria digitata in cattle

Note

  • Head, thorax and abdoman with their various appendages
  • Shape of the scutellum and halter on the thorax
