GENERAL MORPHOLOGY - SAND FLY

Phlebotomus argentipes (Sand Flies)

  • The small size and hairy nature of the body
  • A pair of lanceolate shaped wings held erect while at rest
  • Veins parallel to each other with a few branches
  • Three pairs of legs very long in comparison to the length of the body
  • Transmits Visceral Leishmaniasis (Kala-azar) and Cutaneous Leishmaniasis (Tropical ulcer)
