The Standard was adopted by the Indian Standards Institution on 27 April 1979 after the draft finalized by the Meat Industry Sectional Committee had been approved by the Agricultural and Food Products Division Council.

Abattoirs have not been constructed on modern lines and they do not fulfil the requirements of hygiene, sanitation, public health and of the prevention of cruelty to animals.

This standard has been formulated to help in improving the present conditions of abattoirs and in guiding the construction of new abattoirs on modern lines specially with a view to having greater utilization of slaughter-house by-products.

This standard was first published in 1967.

The present revision incorporates a number of modifications and additions like those of improved lay-outs, flow diagrams and requirements for installation and plant wastes disposal.

For the purpose of deciding whether a particular requirement of this standard is complied with, the final value, observed or calculated, expressing the result of a test or analysis, shall be rounded off in accordance with IS: 2- 1960.
