  • It is classified under Ascomycetes.
  • The most prevalent pathogenic species of Aspergillus is A.fumigatus and is pathogenic to birds and other animals.
  • Other potentially pathogenic species are
      • A. flavus
      • A. nidulans
      • A. niger and
      • A. terreus
  • The disease caused by Aspergillus is known as aspergillosis.
  • In birds it causes granulomatous lesions in the bronchi and lungs. Birds are infected by inhaling the spores, which are found in the air, on the floor and in mouldy foodstuffs.
  • Lesions on the skin have been reported in man and other animals.
