Introduction

INTRODUCTION

  • The three closely related genera namely Trichophyton, Microsporum, and Epidermophyton include the ringworm fungi (dermatophytes) of man and animals.
  • The classification and differentiation of the three genera of dermatophytes are based on the cultural and morphological differences.
  • They infect skin, hair and nails without invading the deeper tissues.
  • Trichophyton infects skin, hair and nails, Microsporum skin and hair and Epidermophyton skin and nails.
  • Species of the three genera present similar morphological appearance in the tissues and correct diagnosis can be made only by cultural examinations.
  • In the tissues they all appear as segmented branching mycelia which may or may not be broken up into arthrospores.
