Age of castration: The pigs can be castrated at any age after one week of birth.

Anaesthesia

  • Large pigs are difficult to control. They are administered with general anaesthesia with chloroform 1 to 11/2 ounces or Nembutol 4% solution about 20-30 cc i/v may be used as general anaesthetic.

Site

  • Posterior aspect of scrotum is preferred.
  • Either single incision on median raphe to expose the testicles or two separate vertical incisions on either side can be done.

Procedure

  • The open covered method is preferred than open uncovered method because of the complications like inguinal/scrotal hernia.
  • The procedure is same like bulls.
