3.1.5. Radioimmunoassay

Radioimmunoassay (RIA) is a highly sensitive and specific assay used to determine the concentration of an antibody or an antigen by exploiting the competition between radiolabeled and unlabeled substances in an antigen-antibody reaction. This assay was developed by Rosalyn Yalow and Solomon Aaron Berson in 1960 to detect the concentration of insulin in plasma. RIA technique requires specialized equipments and special precautions as radioactive substances are employed.
