Lesson 2 : Design As Process

Examining the Influences

The end product for which the objectives have been set will not be an article performing in the vacuum, rather have to exist in a complex environment comprising of number of influences. One must be aware of these influences at time of conceiving the idea and should consider them even while setting the objectives for any design project. These influences are usually external in nature, not the inherent characters of the end product. For example, in case of apparel, these influences can be:

  1. the purpose
  2. the occasion on which it will be used (routine or special)
  3. the user of the product (age, sex, size, weight, figure, colour, preferences, and budget)
  4. the conditions in which it is to be used (household/professional use or during specific climates/ season)

These factors play important role in determining an apparel’s development and final form. Knowledge of these influences also serve as guide during next step as they determine the characteristics the product must have to perform effectively.
