Lesson 2 : Design As Process

Evaluating the Product

After preparation of the final product, it is assessed for its characteristics and performance according to the criteria set to meet the goals. For this purpose quantitative as well as qualitative analysis can be carried out. The quantitative analysis involves use of standardized tests to establish that standards pertaining to different parameters are met. The parameters that are tested in case of garments include:

  • fit of the garment
  • fastener quality (strength and appropriateness)
  • garment comfort (thermal regulation)
  • colour fastness in case of piece dyeing is carried out
  • seam strength and stitch length, etc.

The qualitative analysis of prepared garments include asking questions both to evaluate a particular visual aspect of the garments and to explore new ideas for improvements in future.

Design as a process may be include different number of steps and their levels for different designers depending on their expertise, knowledge and facilities available to them. For example, a home sewer may go through the entire process from original idea to finished garment while the commercial firms who specialize in a particular age group, and/or garment type and have high technological level, may have well established goals, influencing factors, and criteria; so they simply start directly from step of making plan.
