Making the Plan

After the objectives are set, the relevant influences have been examined and identified and the criteria suggested by them are established, the range of choices is narrowed, and the subsequent step, making the plan gets its target. During this step, the de­signer selects on the basis of the previous steps in the process the following:

  • materials (fabrics, trims, accessories)
  • feature (elements of designs)

After selecting the materials and features, he plans their use of in such a way that the product gets the characteristics to perform, to meet the crite­ria and fulfill its purpose. It includes preparation outline about how different materials and their characteristics will be picked up and utilized to prepare a garment that possesses function, structure and decoration. The outline will include the illustration of design and the description of each component of the garment i.e., minute details about the colour and texture of different fabrics, fasteners, trims and accessories’ material so that when they are assembled they create pleasing silhouette lines and effective interior lines to meet the requirements of a user. It will answer to the following aspects of a garment:

  • the garment function to meet its purpose
  • position of the openings and their function
  • means of providing space for moving, ease, stretching, and bending
  • type of fit in­tended and how to achieve it
  • relation of the garment to the structure of the body
  • specific fabrics to be used (fibre content, structure, weight, colour, etc.)
  • type of other supplies and their characteristics needed like:
    • linings (type and parts where needed)
    • buttons (type, their position and number)
    • zip­pers (type, position and colour)
    • interfacings (type and parts where needed)
  • the use of elements and princi­ples of visual and tactile design
