Lesson 3 : Elements and Principles Applicable to Garments

Emphasis

Emphasis refers to the centre of interest in a garment that arrests the attention of the observer by leading the eye first to the most important part of the design and then to other subordinating areas in the order of their importance. The central point in the design emerges out of sensible organization of the elements of design. There are several ways by which one may create emphasis or attract attention and the most important of these are as follows:

  • By the use of contrast of hue, value or intensity in colour, lines, shape or sizes
  • By having sufficient background shape around objects
  • By isolation of the object or design feature

Emphasis in the garment may give direction and organization to a design and avoid confusion to improve the design's visual appeal and style. Emphasis can be created by making the object larger, more sophisticated, more decorative, by placing it in the foreground where it standout visually more than other objects in a design.
