Definition and concept

Line refers to a continuous mark or a track of the moving point, may be straight or curved or the connection between two points. It may be instead the effect made by the edge of an object or row of dots when no actual line exists itself. Line performs the following functions:

  1. con­nects two or more points along a continuous path
  2. guides the eye in the direction of movement of the line
  3. divides the area through which it passes, i.e., create a breaking point in space
  4. defines a shape or silhouette
  5. communicates a mood or character

Line is a fundamental element of design that establishes the style of the garments. It is most important variable of fashion and regulates the use of other elements in a garment.
