Lesson 05: Camera Features and Effects

Telephoto Lenses

The telephoto (or zoomed-in position) lens, Fig. 2.5(b), has the opposite qualities of the wide-angle lens. First, it does not have a large field of view-though it does magnify the area we want the viewer to see. Second, it needs constant focusing (sharpening of the picture to pre-vent haziness). And third, the zooming in makes movements appear much slower and 'reduces' distances on screen. In a televised cricket match, the distance between the bowler and the batsman appears to be very little when the shot is from the bowler's end in an MCU. However, when the camera switches over to the side position, we see the actual distance be-tween the wickets to be more. This is because the camera is now on a wide shot. Cars on a busy street appear to be much closer and moving slowly when shot with a telephoto lens. Such shots are common in Hollywood movies.
