Folk Media

Definition

folk media are personal forms of entertainment and communication. Folk art differs from primitive art in its outlook and character
Folk art has its own individuality and character and it exists by its intrinsic merit i.e., flight of fancy of the artist, its symmetrical form, rhythm of design and efficient workmanship. Materials used in folk art are local and not imported from outside folk art is a higher form of culture in comparison to primitive art. Folk forms are religion community, cast, culture and language specific and bare values unique to them.

Folk culture in a society is seen in four different forms

  1. Oral tradition
  2. Material culture:
  3. Performing arts

Among these, the Oral tradition and the Performing arts appear to be the main media of communication. The folk arts have been used for moral, religious and socio-political purposes in India right from ancient times. Rarely they have been resorted for pure entertainment alone.

  3. Folk Songs
  4. Folk Theatres

Advantages of the folk Media:

  1. The folk media are close to the hearts and minds of the people.
  2. They are in local colloquial dialects.
  3. Rapport is immediate and direct
  4. Folk media are enjoyed by persons of different age groups.
  5. Cost is low
  6. Electricity is not a must
  7. They are flexible and accommodate new subjects and themes.
  8. Folk forms have generous and mix of dance, songs, prayer etc.
  9. It invites the participation of folk also.
  10. The folk art satisfies ones innate need of self expression and satisfaction.
  11. The folk media preserves and disseminates traditions and cultures of forefathers in a lively manner.
