The National Botanical Research Institute (NBRI) is popularly known as Sikander Bagh
The Institute was laid out by Nawab Saadat Ali Khan, further improved upon
by Nawab Wajid Ali Shah who named it after his wife Sikander Mahal Begum.
The garden is spread over 27 hectares and
has a library, a large herbarium and well equipped laboratories.
The main objective of this garden is to extend knowledge for establishing scientifically planned gardens to carry on research on horticultural plants, essential oil bearing and other economic and medicinal plant.
The garden has done good work in plant production, improvement of ornamentals through breeding and developed improved techniques of ornamentals for rose-oil extraction.
The garden has developed the techniques of preserving flowers
and ornamental foliage in dry form for dry flower arrangements and commercial use.
The gardens with fine lawns, rose gardens, conservatory, cactus house and lily pools are very well maintained.
