Different Areas of Residential Garden

The three major areas of a residential garden are

  1. Approach Area
    • The area of public access is usually the front yard. This is the portion of the house that is on view to the public. It creates the setting and tone of the home and should appear large enough to set off the house from the street.
    • It may need to allow for safe access by any automobile.
    • The approaches should be direct, shortest possible and must occupy little space.
    • Approach area is of two types (a) A walk to the front door for the general public use and
      (b) a drive or walk to rear door and garage for the general service purposes.
  2. Service area
    • Service area is meant for supply and disposal of waste such as garbage. The area for service and work accommodates places for garbage and trash disposal, clothes drying, vegetable gardens, garden sundries, equipment, compost or mulch piles, dog houses, sandboxes, lawn mowers, storage facilities and other untidy items.
    • The problem is one of screening and yet maintaining accessibility.
    • In this regard, the service area can often be separated into two locations, one in the back and the other in side yard usually accommodates one of them.
  3. Outdoor Living Area
    • Atleast half of the area should be devoted to outdoor living or garden area which is to be beautified with living plants and other outdoor features. To be most functional, the outdoor living area should be an extension of the interior of the dwelling.
    • It should have accessibility from the inside living area. It should be leveled , or should consists of atleast a series of leveled areas, sloping only enough to provide proper drainage.
    • This area should be sufficiently screened and sheltered to assure privacy and comfort, taking full advantage of shade and cool breezes.
    • All elements of this area should be planned to contribute to a total affect of pleasant and beautiful living space.
    • Prominent in the outdoor living may be a patio, which is a paved area attached to the house, with or without a structural ceiling.
    • When space permits, the outdoor living area may be separated from other areas used for more active recreational purposes.
    • If space permits private area can be divided to include privacy for relaxation and spaciousness for more vigorous recreational activities.
