Story telling

Almost all parents and guardians have noticed that children love to hear stories very much. They disturb parents and sometimes annoy them by requesting again and again to tell them stories.

Stories of animals, birds and other fantasy stories please them very much. Stories can be told in many ways like:

  1. Simply narrating a story: When in a group sitting under a tree or in a class room, the teacher or a parent or even any other adult may tell a story to the children. Children generally love to hear stories of animals and birds, or any story which creates thrill and interest to them.
  2. This would help in developing their language. For this, stories must be in simple language and vocabulary. While telling a story children ask various questions for better understanding. The story teller should take these questions as natural and help the children to learn. It is also important to ask the children to repeat the story after they hear it. This will help them to understand better, improve memory, retention and sequence of events.
  3. Telling the Story with proper voice modulation: This is very important to create proper atmosphere for presenting a story. While telling a story if voice is controlled and changed as per the situation and character it would be more natural.
  4. While describing different situations the teacher should be conscious of picturing them through proper modulation of voice. This would give life to stories.
  5. Telling a Story with Actions: Along with modulation, actions are required in making a story more lively and enjoyable. Expression through movement of eyes, with different facial expressions while describing a situation would help children to enjoy the story better.
  6. Dramatization of a Story: Here the teacher while telling a story makes characters play before the children. She can also engage some children in doing so. This process of telling a story is both audio and visual. The children enjoy different roles while hearing a story. This definitely leaves a better impression on their minds.
  7. Telling a Story with Aids: The teacher should try to take the help of as many materials as he can while telling a story for better perception. Ex: Pictures, puppets, masks, Flannel graphs and Model, etc.
    Puppets:

  9. Stories with songs: Children love hearing stories and hearing songs too. When these two things are combined it becomes very enjoyable and effective
  10. Stories in Songs: There are also some stories which are presented only in songs. This is also quite enjoyable but the songs must be quite simple and short.
  11. Describing a Story with Characters Played: This is rather a story in form of a drama. In this process children play different characters of the story and present before others. They may use suitable dresses and makeup to represent the characters. This gives a lively description of the story. It provides opportunity to children to learn character play.
  12. Stories with or in Pictures or Models: It provides the teacher an opportunity to co-ordinate fragmented ideas and give a continuous picture. Children may recollect an old story or may frame a new one out of these. This helps in developing reasoning power. Similarly they may be provided with toys or models instead of pictures and asked to form a story.
