The Organization aims at providing relief rehabilitative and economic assistance to the developing countries. It gives material assistance of food commodities/ milk powder and supports self-help projects - CARE'S major activity in India is suplementary feeding of the nutritionally vulnerable groups of population. As part of the activity CARE currently provides a daily food supplement to 5.5 million pre-school children and pregnant/lactating women and 10.4 million school children in the pre-schools in 15 states under special nutrition and midday meals programmes of the Government of India. For better utilization and greater impact of the food supplement on the nutritional status of beneficiaries, CARE contributes towards integrating the nutrition supplement with nutrition education and preventive and curative health services, CARE also assists in the construction of balwadis for the regular delivery of services and godowns for satisfactory storage of food commodities.

Personnel and operational cost for administering the programmes is borne by the respective state governments for all programmes. For development projects, part of the cost of material inputs is also contributed by the Government. Other agencies which are involved to a small extent in the programmes are local groups such as Mahila Samitis etc. and supports self-help project of improving of education, public health, supplies, tools, books and special equipment to institutions. In India it has also supplied midwifery kits, class¬room kits, school lunch programme etc.. CARE is also assisting in integrated child development projects like those implemented by the Government of Kerala.
