Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO)

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the U.N. plays an important part in increasing food production and taking measures aimed at development of rural families with particular reference to women and children. A network of departmental/divisional co-ordination officers for IVC at the end of 1978, and instructed all FAO country-level representatives to intensify efforts directly benefiting children in 54 FAO field projects. Studies and documents have been prepared on "Prospects for rural children", "the food situation and children", "Rural children", and "what is the meaning of food in the daily life of children and how it affects their future".

The F AO' s inter-departmental working group on IVC is reviewing selected on-going projects in the field of nutrition and home economics, promotion of day-care centres, preparation of training materials for rural women and youth, applied nutrition and supplementary feeding, school forestry and school gardening, production of small animals, the Freedom from Hunger campaign, and the money and medals programmes.
