Aquatic plants

Sacred

  • Aquatic plants form a large group of the flora.
  • The diversity of colour and form exists among these plants.
  • In early Indian literature many mentions of aquatics are found.
  • These plants were treated with honour and respect for their artistic and economic merits.
  • In early Sanskrit literature there is a mention of the blue and white lotus. The flower has distinctly figured in the famous Ajanta caves and in many old temples in India
  • Water plants have very wide distribution and commonly they are found in tanks, ponds, rivers, sheds, ditches and have also adapted themselves to grow in the vicinity of water, low lying areas, partially under water and under marshy conditions

Aquatic plants in Ponds

  • Most of the water plants are easy to grow and once planted, they grow year after year.
  • They can be planted in pools, ponds, tubs or wooden boxes depending on the type of plants, space, situation and growers’ choice.
  • To layout a water garden, the design may range from the completely geometrical pool to the natural pool so often used as a charming adjustment to the rock garden.
  • A large number of plant materials are available to feed the need of various situations, pockets and corners.
  • For moderate depths, Nelumbium, Nymphaea and Victoria are suitable, while Aponogeton and Nuphar can be grown in deep water.
