Italian gardens


  • The Italian gardens, influenced by the Persian garden style were formal romantic gardens which were dominated by architectural features and flowers beds.
  • Hedges formed an integral part of the architecture.
  • The enclosed gardens of villas and places of nobles and rich contributed to Italian gardens.
  • The Italian Renaissance and Baroque gardens, created during a period of 16 th and 17 th centuries.
  • The characteristic features included fountains, sculptures, water canals, box or yew hedges, topiary, arbour, trellis and architecturally beautiful buildings.
  • Cypress, Ilex and roses were the most commonly grown plants in these gardens.
