Chinese gardens


  1. Ornamental gardening in china has largely developed along the line of idealization of natural scenery.
  2. The basis of any Chinese garden is mountains, water and rocks.
  3. Thus, for Chinese, gardening becomes an effort to bring mountains and lakes into one’s own courtyard by arranging rocks, trees and water to suggest an image of nature.
  4. Trees, shrubs, and herbaceous plants were important in gardens and bamboo was a great favourite of the garden artists on account of the beauty and elasticity of the stem.
  5. China gave gardenias, camellias, the peony and chrysanthemum to the gardens of many countries.
  6. The favorite of the Chinese was the plum tree with its pure white flowers. Other favourites were roses, lilies, hollyhocks, water lilies, narcissus, orchids and poppies.
  7. The indigenous trees in Chinese garden include cedar, cherry, chestnut, date, hazel, meldar, mulberry, oak, pear, plum and willow.
  8. The naturalistic pattern of the Chinese garden had become the traditional style and remains so to this day.
