Lesson 15:Specialised Gardens

Gardening in the Shade

  • A garden may have shaded places sometimes.
  • Shaded place in the garden is considered as a nuisance as no plants are likely to flower.
  • This shaded area can be used to lay out a beautiful shade garden with shade-loving plants.
  • Normally the garden may have three types of shaded areas
    • One in the category of dense shadow in north or north-west corner under a high wall or below low-spreading trees where the ground is semi-dark.
    • There are other places where, though there is shade, but the sun penetrates to a considerable extent.
    • There are places which are in half shade like on the east or west sides of the buildings.

  • When gardening is laid under shade of a tree, the tree roots pose a problem by competing with the plants grown under it for water and food.
  • The soil under the trees is to be dug deeply (25-30 cm) to cut the surface feeding roots. This operation should be repeated every year by digging deep along the borders of the beds.
  • The beds are to be fertilized more liberally as some of these fertilizers will be utilized by the tree itself. The soil pH should also be tested.
  • For rationing of water and plant food, shade garden plants under trees are spaced much wider than in the open.
