Lesson 15:Specialised Gardens

Moon Garden

  • Moon garden is a feature which is developed in such a way that it can be enjoyed during the moonlit night, apart from its diurnal beauty.
  • Most of the colorful flowers- yellow, orange, pink, red, maroon, violet, blue, etc. though very attractive during the day, do not show up during the night. Therefore, a garden with such gaudy colours, looking marvelous during the day, presents a dull sight during the night.
  • On the other hand, white colour stands out prominently during a moonlit night against the leaves which look darker during that hour. In addition, if there are flowers which emit sweet smell, they cannot be missed in the darkness. Taking these facts into consideration the concept of moon garden as an important garden feature has taken shape.
  • Moon garden is developed at a quiet corner of a larger garden, preferably where the murmuring sound of the running water from a small brook, a mini waterfall or a fountain already exists.
  • The drone of the hedge cricket, occasional singing of a night bird and the flashing of fireflies add to the depth of serenity.
  • Ornamental plants with cluster of white flowers as well as those with sweet smell are selected for planting in the moon garden.
  • A calm and clear water surface to act as mirror for the star-studded night sky is also constructed.
  • Provision of garden seats in the open or under a bower is also made.
  • Garden lights in this area should be of subdued nature, emitting blue or green gray.
  • A well made and well maintained moon garden brings ethereal joy to the soul during the quiet hours of the night.
