Lesson 15:Specialised Gardens

Selection of planting material

  • Plants of small to medium stature, giving mass flowering and attractive foliage over a long period of the year, should be chosen for a roof garden.
  • Hard and drought tolerant ornamental plants are also good.
  • Use of herbaceous annual flowering plants can give mass flowering, thereby creating a riot of colours.
  • Bulbous plants can be included for their colorful flowers and foliage, produced throughout the year.
  • Only small and medium shrubs of exquisite floral or foliage beauty should be chosen for the roof garden.
  • Small climbers, both annual and perennial may conveniently be placed along posts and pillars as well as on arches on the roof.
  • A good bed for roses can be prepared by constructing an 8 cm thick and 40 cm high brick wall beside the one at the boundary of the roof garden and 30-40 cm away running parallel to it.
  • The space between these two walls may be filled up with the same soil mixture used for the roof garden for planning roses.
  • Besides roses, shrubs and small trees may be accommodated in this bed.
  • Garden features, like lawn, edge, flower beds, rockery, lily pool, fountain, topiary, plant houses, statue, sundial, mini-temple, garden light, music set-up, aquarium, mini-zoo, etc. may be installed to make the roof garden attractive and beautiful.
  • Arch and bower may be constructed where there is no overhead structure.
  • Features, like hedge, shrubbery or avenue, are out of place in a roof garden.
