Lesson 12 : Supporting Materials

Introduction

The supporting fabrics play a backstage role, but if the fabric of the garment or the nature of the design calls for support, those fabrics (along with the additional construction details they require) take on great significance. The fact that their purposes are varied, and that their choice is dependent on the great variety of fabrics with which they will be combined, creates a need for a wide selection of supporting fabrics and causes confusion in the minds of those who sew. The extra expense and additional time and complications of construction discourage some workers and as a result too many home sewers avoid using supporting fabrics. The imaginative use of underlinings and interfacings will result in truly exciting improvements in the quality of home sewing.

To retain shape and support the desired garment contours (parts/portions), inner fabric layers are incorporated into garment structure.

The supporting fabrics may be classified into interfacings and underlinings
