Lesson 13:Twill weave

Introduction

This is the second fabric weave with a distinct diagonal design called wales. In twill weave, warp or filling yarn crosses across two or more filling or warp yarns before interlacement. To form the diagonal line the interlacement progresses by one to the right or left.
Simplest type of twill requires three harnesses and weave is designated by a fraction (interlacement)

Eg: A 5 shaft twill can be designed as

2 2 2 up, 1 down, 2 up (or)
1
3
3 up, 2 down etc.
2
Numerator indicates the number of yarns to be raised and denominator indicates number of yarns to be lowered for insertion of weft.
