Lesson 16: Textile Designs for Household Linens

Kitchen linen

Apron: Apron is wrapped around the body while working in kitchen. Usually light weight fabric is used in preparing apron. The apron (Fig.16.11) is available in various colours. Naturalistic, stylized, geometric designs are mostly used. Motifs are usually based on the items used in kitchens such as fruits, vegetables, spoon, fork, cup etc.

Covers: It includes covers for fridge, microwave, mixer and other similar articles. Range of designs is also available in these covers (Fig.16.12). Surface enrichment can be done by printing, embroidery and patch work. Motifs include stylized, geometric and cartoon characters. Covers can be made more decorative if laces and other trimmings are used.

Mittens: These are a type of gloves which are used during oven functioning. Motifs used are stylized forms of fruits and vegetables, or abstracts and geometric patterns (Fig.16.13).

Mopping cloth: These are simple dusters or a small piece of fabrics used to clean the kitchen, so design possibilities are very less (Fig.16.14). These fabrics have napped surface. They are loosely woven for the absorption of water. Designs are created with the help of different weaves. Pile weave is also seen in mopping cloth.
