Television It is one of the most powerful media of communication. It has come into vogue only in the recent years. It combines both audio & visual impact & is very suitable for the dissemination of agricultural information. It is more useful in teaching how to do a specific job. A beginning has been made in India for using this medium for development programmes since 1967, & it is expected that its use will become more extensive in the coming years.

Television is an audio visual aid used for mass communication which combines all the benefits of other mass media such as radio, newspaper and film. By virtue of fact people can retain the messages 50% or more when both hearing and seeing are employed. The word Television comes from Greek means “far” and a Latin meaning “to see”. Hence it is to see what is far. It is an effectively medium of dissemination and diffusion of information, entertaining, educating and influencing the thought and the attitude of rural viewers.

In 1975, the most momentous development in India is the Satellite Instructional Television Experiment (SITE) was inaugurated and in 1984, a second channel was added to Delhi to provide alternate viewing options. In 1997-98, Doordarshan reached 87% of the population of the country through a network of 897 terrestrial transmitters. It has the production studio at 42 sites, there are 53 other transmitters giving terrestrial support to other channels and doordarshan uses a large number of transponders on the Indian National Satellite (INSAT).
