1.3.1. Introduction
Piloting may be defined as the determination of the position and the direction of the movements of a vessel, involving frequent or continuous reference to land marks, aids to navigation, and depth soundings. Piloting requires greatest experience, and accurate judgment. In all the phases of piloting the navigator must constantly deals with the past, present and the future. Continuous analysis for further plan is essential for successful piloting. The objectives of piloting are to find the direction of vessel movement, distance travelled and depth of sea. Various instruments used for measuring the direction, speed, distance, depth and weather conditions for safe piloting of a vessel. |
