  • Distribution: Over most of Australia, but notably absent from the eastern sea board and Tasmania. Nomadic by nature.
  • Size: 18cm
  • Diet: Basic mixture of cereal seeds, millets and canary seed with oats occasionally. Also green food and carrot.
  • Sexing: Hens develop brown ceres, most noticeable when they are in breeding season. Those of cock bird are blue or purplish in colour.
  • Compatibility:  Can be kept in groups and also in the company of cockatiels. May  live in harmony alongside larger finches, notably whydahs, weavers and java sparrows, but can tend to prove aggressive towards such birds.
  • Pet appeal: Still most popular per bird in the world.
