Approaching and handling a dog

APPROACHING AND HANDLING A DOG

  • Always talk to a dog as the handler approach it to pick it up.
  • The operator should approach from the side rather than directly from the front.
  • Small and medium sized dog can be picked up like that of puppies.
  • The frightened or nervous dog should be distracted or confused to divert its intention to bite before handling.
  • It should not be reached on first approach, the operator should sit close to the dog, size of the handler may intimidate the dog.
  • After calming the dog the handler can proceed further.
  • Some times handler can approach a small dog without looking directly at it. It will confuse the dog
  • One may apply a muzzle or place a towel over the dog to partially blind it.
