Appreciation and Differentiation of Symptoms caused by Toxic Metals

Arsenic

  • Vomition, Severe gastroenteritis, colic, drooling,staggering gait, diarrhoea, hind limb paralysis, death in 1-3 days.

Copper

  • Gastroenteritis, abdominal pain, anorexia, dehydration, shock. Hemolysis and hemoglobinuria occurs after 3 days. In chronic poisoning, weakness, jaundice, respiratory insufficiency and renal failure.

Lead

  • Anorexia, colic often accompanied by vomition and constipation, depression, ataxia, circling, seizures, tremors, blindness, anemia, abortion and death.

Mercury

  • Early signs of mercuric salts include stomatitis, pharyngitis, vomition, diarrhoea, dehydration followed by shock and death. Surviving animals show oliguria and azotemia. Organo-mercurials show neurologic signs like ataxia, incoordination, paresis and blindness. Abnormal posture, Paralysis occur before death.

Zinc

  • Painful local irritation of GI tract, vomition and diarrhoea with blood, abdominal pain, icteric mucous membrane, and death.
  • In chronic cases decrease growth rate, fatigue, paresis of hind limb anemia and jaundice.

Selenium

  • Acute: Colic, bloat,dark watery diarrhoea, dyspnoea with laboured breathing, frothing from nostrils, polyuria, cyanosis, coma and death.
  • Chronic: Cracking of hooves, deformed hoof, cracks in tail and horn, lameness, stiffness of joints, loss of hair.
