TOXIC NON METALS

Appreciation and Differentiation of Symptoms caused by Toxic Non –Metals

Fluoride

  • Chronic poisoning more common with lameness, enlargement of bones, stiff gait , rough hair coat, anorexia, mottling of teeth which stain brown with uneven surface.

Phosphorus

  • Acute poisoning: Vomition, severe diarrhoea (often haemorrhagic), colic and a garlic-like odour from the breath, abdominal pain and jaundice. Hepatic failure is followed by convulsions and death.
  • Chronic poisoning: Phossy jaw, it includes first toothache which leads to its extraction. The socket fails to heal and there is an offensive discharge, the bone is exposed and show necrosis with the formation of a sequestrum.

Nitrate and
Nitrite

  • Acute: subnormal body temperature, muscular tremors , ataxia, Brown cyanotic coloration of mucous membrane, dyspnoea ,frequent urination, collapse, coma and clonic convulsions.
  • Chronic toxicity: Poor weight gain, decreased milk production, abortion, and still birth.

Sodium
chloride

  • Increased thirst, pruritis, salivation, nasal discharge, urinary incontinence or polyuria, diarrhoea , vomition, nervous signs include hyperesthesia, blindness, moving in circles, shivering, intermittent tonic ,clonic-tonic seizures,
  • Incoordination, ataxia, swaying and walking backward, dragging of hind leg and knuckling of hind legs.
  • Poultry: Weakness and paralysis.
