6.5.1.1 ß- Oxidation of saturated fatty acids and energy production

Fatty acids are oxidized to acetyl-CoA. Fatty acid oxidation and energy production takes place in mitochondria; each step involves acyl-CoA derivatives catalyzed by separate enzymes, utilizes NAD+ and FAD as coenzymes, and generates ATP. Fatty acid oxidation is an aerobic process, requiring the presence of oxygen.

There are five steps involved.
